Update fails, NSwB

Doing a live update for NSwB failed this morning. It failed on the 3rd step (Process Updates) will loading the 2nd update. I've tried rebooting etc. and still get the same failure. How can I cure this problem? I'm running Windows 10x64 Pro.

Thanks

Re: Update fails, NSwB

Since I didn't get any quick responses with ideas how to correct the problem I ended up uninstalling and then reinstalling NSwB and that solved everything! Certainly not the best way of correcting problems but at least it worked.

I can't get the pages that have the download/software to load - keep getting "Unexpected Error."  Did you have any trouble when you went to reinstall?

Re: Update fails, NSwB

I didn't have any problem at all. I uninstalled the previous installation leaving all my data in place. Then I rebooted, log into my Norton website and downloaded the software again and installed it. It went very smoothly with no problems at all. It took a while to complete all the updates after the reinstallation but everything installed correctly and I'm totally up-to-date including all patches.

I finally got to the site and was able to load the new version.  I found I had to switch from Internet Explorer to Chrome.  Not sure why.

Hello Joanne19541

What version of which product are you running?  Also what is your operating system?

What did you have installed previously? If it wasn't a Norton product, how was it removed? Did you run live update until there were no more updates and restart when necessary?

Please come back and help us to help you by answering these questions.

Thanks.

Re: Update fails, NSwB

Hello Msradell

I had tonight an instance with Automatic Live Update with my NS 22.5.0.15; I waited about a half hour or an hour and  it fixed itself. There is usually no need to uninstall and reinstall your Norton product for that reason.. There is a quicker way which is usually just as effective. We have a tool call Norton Reinstall Tool. It uninstalls your Norton program and then it installs the latest version of the product. It keeps the same settings. Here's the link for the next time you might need it or if anyone who reeds or reads this post.

Of course you can follow the procedure that you did use and accomplish the same thing.

Thanks.

@ ALL,

I think floplot hit the nail on the head with her comment:

"I waited about a half hour or an hour and  it fixed itself."

When you have a failed LiveUpdate item, try again later - Norton has suggested in the past to wait up to 24 hours to see if the update will come down successfully. I will check History, see which update(s) failed and then usually will try manual LiveUpdates every 15 minutes or so after a failed update (probably overkill checking that often) checking to see if that update(s) completes during a later update.

Checking my LiveUpdate History, I managed to find an example:

It is quite clear there is a server/connection problem and no reason to uninstall/reinstall in this case.

To immediately jump in and do an uninstall/reinstall (regardless of which method you use) IMHO is overkill after an update fails.

Please remember, servers can have glitches from time to time and are at times taken off line for maintenance (sometimes less than a minute - other times for longer), but it is far easier to rerun LiveUpdate than uninstall/reinstall immediately.

Re: Update fails, NSwB

I actually used the Norton reinstallation tool but didn't go into the details of what I did for the uninstall/reinstall process. I've used it before with great success it is very quick and easy. As for what Yank said I had already tried multiple times over about 4 hours with no success. As I said in my 1st post it was failing in the installation phase, not the download phase so it wasn't a problem with the servers.

Hello Msradell,

Just curious. Did you try a Help>Get Support scan for your Norton product before you un and reinstalled? A problem might have cropped up with your original installation that Norton could have fixed.

.....and what would happen if the download phase managed to get corrupted - perhaps fail the installation phase?  The possible corruption could be due a break in the server connection or perhaps a corrupted update being loaded onto the server.  I have seen where updates were in fact corrupted, Norton was made aware of it, the update was pulled and another corrected update was placed on the server.  Seems like that is what happened not too long ago with 22.5.0.124 (?).
