Upgrade From Windows 7 to Windows 10 - Advice Needed!

Hello All,

I'm thinking to upgrade from W 7 Home Prem. to Windows 10 on two desktops. (The over the top way). Am I right in thinking the best way to go about this is to first uninstall my Norton Security (Latest Version 22.7.0.76), start the upgrade process with Microsoft, then let all the updates for that kick in incl. Windows Defender. Once all that is done then re install my Norton Security? Also remembered the disabling of fast start up in Windows 10.

Any advice on the above would be greatly appreciated.

Of course you can do it that way.  I didn't.  I just upgraded with Norton on board, but I have since done a clean Win10 install on both of my machines.

And remember to back-up before you start the upgrade; problems can occur and important files could be lost.

Thanks 'Krusty',

When you first did this, did you have any problems with Windows updates and 'Defender' as your Norton product was already sitting on your pc? I know various program updates have been issued since you first did the upgrade.

brummie,

No, I had no problem with updates at the time.  You are correct that there have been many updates since I upgraded, which was the day Win10 became available.  If you do happen to have any problems with WD definition updates you can uninstall Norton long enough to update WD, then reinstall Norton.

If you would feel more comfortable there is no reason you can't use your method to avoid potential problems.

Oh, I completely agree with Alan Russell, do a backup of your files, but I would suggest doing an image back up your entire hard drive in case anything disastrous happens.

Hi, brummie. I upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7 via Windows Updates, with no issues.

Norton even came along for the ride on both my machines !

However, if you DO experience problems, you can always reinstall Norton.

Good morning 'F 4 E',

That sounds like a good idea, I was thinking about this yesterday and I know there have been lots of updates with W10 and Norton Security since the launch of the new operating system so hopefully the early bugs were ironed out. Thanks for your input.

@ Alan Russell,

I did do a back up of my important bits, including a couple of games, thanks.

Hello,

Just an update. Everything appears to be ok after upgrading to Windows 10. The Norton icon was showing red in task bar and the fix button wasn't working after clicking three times, however I restarted pc and all was well again with Norton! I then disabled the fast start up feature.

The only concern I have at the moment is the fact that 'Windows Defender' shows it is on and the buttons for it are grayed out? I seem to remember reading on these forums that in time the Windows update feature may give problems concerning 'Defender'.

Hi, brummie. On my laptop, it is the same. Greyed out, but Defender IS off.

Hi F4E,

That's interesting, I just double checked the settings and they still show 'on' but greyed out, that is good to know then... Everything still seems to working as it should do. The other thing I did last night was make IE 11 my default browser even though I normally use Chrome. Until they make 'Edge' compatible with Norton I will hang back on using that. Edge does look good though!

I will probably have to upgrade my sons pc today and after monitoring our systems a while I will close this thread. Thanks for your valuable input.

Re: Upgrade From Windows 7 to Windows 10 - Advice Needed!

Hi,

Just upgraded second desktop pc from Windows 7 to W10 and again all went well, although the download took a lot longer than it did for my pc. The only glitch to report was the same one with my pc, on completion, in that Norton Security showed a red task bar icon and the fix failed to fix it. On re boot, it cleared and all was well again. I'm currently upgrading my son's laptop now so hopefully that goes well too.

I've clicked this thread as solved.

I see you've already done it ...

I was going to suggest not so much uninstalling your Norton but just Disable Autoprotect by right mouse clicking on the system tray Norton icon selecting Permanently and remembering to re-enable it after the upgrade.

I know Norton can slow down anything that goes deep into the system and I've come across a few instances of it drastically slowing down Windows Update so when you are dealing with a secure source that you "sort of" trust I don't think one is risking much but turning this off.

Do make sure your Norton is fully up to date before the Windows upgrade and run Live Update a few times afterwards, using Restart in each case.

Re: Upgrade From Windows 7 to Windows 10 - Advice Needed!

Morning Hugh,

To be honest I never thought of doing that (Disabling Autoprotect') which sounds like a great idea, but as you have probably read from my earlier posts I didn't uninstall my Norton in the end and all went well. I did have to restart my pc at some stage on both desktops because Norton was showing red in taskbar and the 'auto fix' didn't work and as soon as I did that all was well again. Surprised really how everything went so smoothly. (I'm touching wood now).

Have a good day.

FWIW: Microsoft will not automatically apply the Anniversary Update to any machine that’s still in its 30-day free rollback window. source AskWoody

Sounds pretty normal! Keep it that way!
