Upload with NOBU is extremely slow

After having used NOBU for more than a year something recently went wrong with the backup and I had to reinstall the client (as advised by Norton support) which also meant a new, full backup.

But it’s painfully slow. My internet connection is 60/10 Mbps. Speedtest.net show upload speed = 8.5 Mbps but the NOBuAgent.exe process is only uploading with 22 - 25 KB/s (Windows resource monitor).

If I try to upload files to skydrive or dropbox upload speed is 250 – 300 KB/s

As advised in this forum I have tried to break up the backup job into smaller pieces by selecting only one category at a time, but the upload speed is the same.

I need to backup about 38GB. After 10 hours the log shows that only 700 MB (1%) has been backed up.

Re: Upload with NOBU is extremely slow

Update... I've discovered that upload speed is decent +200 KB/s until i include mail in the backup job - then upload speed drops to 25 KB/s. Mail file is Outlook 2007 pst, about 15 GB.

Re: Upload with NOBU is extremely slow

Hello,

There are a couple of likely factors at play:

  1. You can control how much bandwidth the service uses per device. Click on Settings, next to the Device you want to alter, and then click on the Other tab. You'll see Backup Speed as the first choice.
  2. Connectivity between you and the data centers. If there is a connectivity problem between you and the data centers it can cause slow downs. A traceroute would help determine the number of hops, where lag is at during the transfer and if any particular point is having problems. This is something out of our control to really change if there is an issue. More often than not a lot this type of issue will work itself out with a little time.

Re: Upload with NOBU is extremely slow

Hi,

1. i only have one device (C:\users\) defined. So it should be the same no matter if I backup pictures or mail

2. no doubt i have a fairly long way to the data center  - traceroute to back.backup.com  shows 9 hops and response time of about 140 ms. - but i cannot see how that should give me 8 times as high speed when backing up files as when i'm bacing up mail?

Re: Upload with NOBU is extremely slow

Hello

Did you check the current settings to see what it was set at?

140 ms isn't great especially if its mid way through the traceroute. Do you mind sharing the traceroute blocking the first couple of entries for your own security?

The type of file doesn't really matter since all data is encrypted for transfer. The service has no way of knowing what is being uploaded in those packets since that encryption is all performed on your machine.

Re: Upload with NOBU is extremely slow

Backup speed is set to fastest.

Could it have something to do with the mail file beeing one big file, and all other data small files?

Below is the trace (now 18 hops)

It seems like the trace delay mainly is on the hop between UK and US - isn't there a backup center located in europe that can be used??

Re: Upload with NOBU is extremely slow

The traceroute is showing no anomalies. To be safe I've also checked with our Ops team and their opinion matches mine. At the moment there isn't a specific UK data center for the service. I don't have any info on if or when that may change.

The overall size of a file doesn't matter since the data is compressed and broken up into chunks for transfer. The service would never know what was being uploaded as a result. Also subsequent backups should only be sending incremental changes. We may need to arrange a support session with one of our EMEA support teams for you. If you're amiable to that let me know and we'll take the next steps.

Re: Upload with NOBU is extremely slow

I've been trying for 'some days now' to get the backup completed, but unfortunately without success after days of waiting the backup stopped at 24 GB -  So i would like to arrange a support session. How do we proceed?
