When activating a newly purchased key, is actual download necessary?

Hi.  I already have Norton Security installed from last year - my license expires tomorrow.

I activated the new key I bought from Costco.

All seems well, except I never really DOWNLOADED anything this time.

Is my assumption, that a download would not be downloading anything new,

and that all that needs to happen is that the same old code be licensed for another year, correct?

Thanks, Fred

That's right,  and to check that days have  been added:

1.    Open your Norton product.
2.    Do one of the following:
       - In the main window, next to Subscription Status, view the remaining days until your product       expires.
       - In the main window, click Help, then under ACCOUNT INFORMATION, click Subscription Status.

Hello Fred

What version of NS are you running? Please remember to run live update after installing the new key.

Thanks.

Great idea to check for latest version!  However, I'm not sure what my version no. is.  "Help" gives an option to check for the latest version.  When I exercised it , I received the message that I have "the latest version".  Is there a better way to check?

Thanks,  Fred

Under "Help" select "About" on the right side. Latest version is 22.6.0.142.

Re: When activating a newly purchased key, is actual download necessary?

Thanks for all the help, Rainbow_2, floplot and PhoneMan.  Each message helped in a unique way.

Turned out 4 of  5 of my computers had the latest, v. 22.6.0.142.

One did not - it had 22.5.2.15.  That computer and its use was quite similar to one other which ended up with the latest version.

More to the point, I (thought I had) upgraded them re Norton Security the same way - put in the new Product Key but had not downloaded.  That supposition, of course, is impossible in the face of reason.

Therefore I have as my answer:  "I don't know - maybe yes and maybe no.".

Without any definitive answer as to which it's SUPPOSED to be: -

1)  Update the product key only and don't download, or

2  Update the product key AND download.  -

I'll have to assume answer no. 2 in the future, to be safe.

Does anyone know which of the 2 answers it SHOULD be?

Thanks,  Fred

Re: When activating a newly purchased key, is actual download necessary?

Hello Fred

If you are already running Norton Security, then there is no need to download it again. You just have to put in the new key just before it expires and then run Live Update to get the latest updates.

After you have put the new key into all of the computers, devices, then go to Help and run Subscription Status. That should show the new number of days left on your subscription. Do this on each computer so that the correct number of days show up.

Thanks.

Re: When activating a newly purchased key, is actual download necessary?

Thanks floplot, for that last one.  It ties together what all 3 of you were trying to tell me all along - not to take anything away from the other 2 people or their good answers; because apparently I'm a little (?) slow - it took this long for it to sink in:

So I guess those 2 answers above that I wanted folks to choose from are both wrong! and the 3rd, right answer is:

Don't download;  just apply the key - then run Live Update and IT will bring the software up to the latest "version".

Did I miss that in Norton's instructions?  If that's there, apparently so.  Not the first time I ever missed something!

Anyway - thanks a bunch for you three's patience and perseverance!  You helped me.

Best regards,  Fred

Hello Fred

I'm glad that I could help you do what  you wanted to get done. Since your issue seems to be solved now, could you pick one post that gave you the solution and mark that post as the one that gave you the solution.? On the bottom of each post there is a place where you can mark that post as the solution.

Thanks.
