Re: When will Norton stop support for products on Windows VISTA?

Microsoft stops supporting Vista as of April 2017. So you only have till then to purchase a new pc or switch to a Chromebook or a Mac. It's up to you. As of right now Norton still supports XP. So they will most likely still support Vista. But using an outdated and unsupported operating system is a dangerous thing to do. If you keep Vista passed April of 2017 then you will no longer get any Windows Updates. Those updates often patch security holes and vulnerabilities in Windows. No security product can protect you from that.

@g_cafe_c:

I don't know the exact date yet, you can trust Norton. For related info, you may read the Norton 360 (discontinued) product page and this re Norton Security.

System Requirements

  • Windows Operating Systems
  • Microsoft Windows XP (all 32-bit versions) with Service Pack 3 (SP 3) or later
  • Microsoft Windows Vista (all versions) with Service Pack 1 (SP 1) or later
  • Microsoft Windows 7 (all versions) with Service Pack 1 (SP 1) or later
  • Microsoft Windows 8/8.1 (all versions). Some protection features are not available in Windows 8 Start screen browsers.
  • Microsoft Windows 10 (all versions). Edge browser not supported.

For more info, you may Chat with Norton Support.

Please post back if this or any other comment solves your problem. THX...

I am guessing we still then have some time (what maybe a year?)  after MS stops supporting Vista to still be able to use Norton Security.  Why?  Still two machines here are using Windows Vista with Norton Security.  I myself am transitioning to Windows 10, but the Vista machines still both work well.  More solid support info about Norton Security on Vista is still something I want to know.

I looked at the link you listed too.  What I wish knowing, is for HOW LONG after April 2017?

You cannot and should not be using Vista past April of 2017. At all. Just like Windows XP. Unless you want to be a hacker victim.

Threats to XP have hardly materialised. It will be the same for Vista. I'll continue to run vista on one pc until it dies as I've some hardware & software not useable with later Windows. That pc ran XP till I happened to pick up a free Vista. If used on line much you need to be protected, wary and follow safe practice but not panic!

Sorry, but I don't think so:

Neither of your references change my view. Of course "Nothing Is 100 Percent Secure" for all purposes but careful use of XP or Vista for particular purposes by ordinary users can be!

I'm in the same situation in that my PC is Vista but my laptop is Windows 7.

There is nothing to say when Norton will cease regarding Vista but also see here

Re: When will Norton stop support for products on Windows VISTA?

Please keep in mind that NO security in the world can protect you from an out of date OS. Every Tuesday or so Microsoft releases Windows Updates. Some are for various fixes but most are to patch security holes. If your pc is no longer receiving any Windows Updates then your pc is an open door for hackers and exploits.

Hardly an open door, esp with Norton. Practical experience and a paucity of problems for ordinary users reported on the internet suggests that, at least with basic care one may be quite safe.

NewRoger........Please do not gibe false information to our community. I fix computers, build computers, remove malware and setup home networks. If anyone plans on doing any type of online shopping or banking then you need to stay current on security. Certain banks do not even allow users to login using outdated browsers and an OS. Google Chrome stopped supporting XP and Vista awhile ago. As i previously stated no security to can patch vulnerability holes in your OS.  Staying safe online means staying up to date and current in your security. Hackers love pray who do not have there pc's up to date. That is how exploits happen.

If nothing else this thread has given me food for thought about whether to upgrade the OS on my to PC from Vista to Windows 7 since most of my applications are shown to be compatable with Windows 7. Or to buy a new PC with Windoows 10.

Allan, My main desktop and laptop are Windows 10 and I find them most satisfactory and better than all previous windows. If you can easily afford a replacement and any necessary new software, I'd go for a new win10 pc. I'd tend to keep the vista pc as is as a spare/odd job device.

I tell all my customers the same thing. If you do not need any software which is Windows based then go with a Google Chromebook. Safer and faster then any Windows machine. i have 2 of them and my son uses one for college. Very cheap too. I bought his for only $269 (14").

If requirements are limited, a Chromebook could do, but for greater flexibility, ability, variety of progs, apps and games Windows would be the winner. In fact if you could make do with a Chromebook, simply converting or dual booting your vista pc to linux would be better and cheapest.

Installing Linux is actually a great choice NewRoger. As long as his hardware is still good. Ubuntu allows users to run it from a USB stick. That way they can try it without actually installing it. And its FREE!
