Why does Identity Safe log me in when I am not logged in?

Why does Identity Safe log me in when I am not logged into Identity Safe?

Dell Inspiron XP home SP3 N360 V6.2.1.5 using Google Chrome as browser.

I used REVO Uninstaller Pro to clean my browser histories, as well as deleting browsing history function of Chrome itself. Then I restarted my computer.

I open Chrome to go to a website I read (I had manually logged out of it prior to clearing histories) to log in.

Since the toolbar to get to the Identity Safe login que is not visable until I go to someplace that requires a login, I had to go to this site first.

Why, without me being logged into Identity Safe, did Identity Safe automatically fill in my username & password?

Hi,

Could this be the reason?

I'm on NIS but the screen is about the same as 360's

Hi longcaster,

Unless I am missing something, that is not Norton Identity Safe logging you in.  Two indicators of that:  First, as you mentioned, the Norton Identity Safe message bar at the top of the page is prompting you to log into Identity Safe - therefore IDS is not open and will not log you in.  Second, the login fields will appear as a weird lime-green color when Norton autofills them.  Those in your screenshot appear to be pale yellow.  I notice that the "Remember me" box just below the login fields is checked.  If you have not been deselecting that when you visit the website, the site itself may be logging you in automatically.

To my knowledge, I have to be logged into Identity Safe to have it fill in username & password.

SendOfJive is trying to point out that because of the color in the log in fields, this does not look like Identity Safe filling in. It is your browser or a cookie  filling in because you have the 'Remember Me' box checked.

If you log into your Identity Safe, the color would change to the lime green mentioned.

SOJ,

I've been playing  - again.

My NIS identity safe is filling things in with a green background BUT my stand alond identity safe is using a gold background.

Does this have any bearing on things?

Dick

Looking at the settings page posted above, this must be NIS or 360. Too many options for the stand alone ID Safe.

I haven't used the standalone version.  But even if it colors the login fields gold, it wouldn't apply in this case since longcaster is using Norton 360 and therefore could not have the standalone version installed.

That is correct.  That is why it cannot be Norton Identity Safe filling in the blanks, it must be something else.

My browser's ability to save usernames and passwords was disabled by NIS on one system and the stand alone on another. I suspect that 360 should do the same but may not have?

"Turn off the browser's password manager" is a setting in the Identity Safe Browsing Options.

Is there an expert out there that would know if the 'Remember Me' check box is controlled by the password manager or a cookie?

I have password manager turned off, and have logged out of Identity Safe. When I go to a site where I have checked Remember Me, the information has been filled in. Looks like the cookie overrides other settings.

An NON-expert comment for peterweb - I do not use password manager but I do use Chrome which will remember my passwords for me.  However it always seems to operate separately from any "remember me" check boxes.  And recently I had a cookie cleanout and had to fill in a lot of passwords anew.  Not proof, but a possible indication that it can be cookie related...?

Re: Why does Identity Safe log me in when I am not logged in?

Hi peterweb,

The "Remember me" checkboxes on websites do use cookies to remember a user from one visit to the next.  Some sites also use Flash Local Shared Objects (Flash Cookies), which allow a site to recognize you even if you delete the HTTP cookie that the site has stored on your PC.   The "remember me' option on a website is independent of the browser's password manager.

Thanks Andmike and SendOfJive.

I was fairly sure it was a cookie filling in the log in. Just needed reassuring.

I was just trying to point out for the OP that it is definitely not Norton filling in the log ins.

Re: Why does Identity Safe log me in when I am not logged in?

This stuff happened after cookie cleaning, temp file cleaning, histories cleared, using the Chrome history cleaning, then restarting. I was not logged into Chrome, I was not logged into N360 either.

I  had not logged to anything after my restart. That is why this is so puzzling. Even if a site was remembering a login password, with my cookies, temp files, and other stuff cleaned I had not yet gotten to where I would ask the site to recognize me.

I posted a screenshot of the REVO Uninstaller Pro Browser cleaner I used on page one.

Can you confirm the background color of a log in using Identity Safe by browsing to a site requiring a log in you have saved?
