Why Does NPM Keep Closing After A Few Hours On Firefox Or Chrome?...

I mean, this is ridiculous. First, Symantec removes the ability to have my passwords stored locally (MUCH SAFER with MY setup); now, site after site are jumping on the 'We will no longer function on the IE platform.....', THAT, I can understand. BUT, at LEAST IE doesn't kick Password Manager to the curb after a little while. I don't see the ability to change a 'time' setting in the 'settings' section of NPM; so, who, how, and why is this utility getting closed after 'n' time passes...'hmmmmm, Bobby' ?????  However, what I'm realistically looking for here is a way to circumvent this 'closed' condition unless I reboot, or close it myself. Is there something I can tweak to keep it open? I have an eidetic memory and a 16 digit password on my vault; but, it's just inconceivable that I need to issue it soooo often to keep opening this damn password vault in the cloud.

  • Norton 360 Premium II v22.19.9.63
  • Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7 Pro SP1, Windows XP Pro SP3
  • NO error messages
  • NO steps to reproduce in-house. It just happens.
  • HOWEVER...IF there's a logfile I didn't see one. Also the System and Application Event Logs appear to contain no evidence of any glaring issues.

Hi FalconEddy,

Sorry for the issue you are facing.

- Closing the vault on machine reboot is expected behavior of Norton Password Manager extensions (To keep your data secure)

- Easy way to overcome remembering a long vault password is by using "Mobile Unlock" Feature which is part of Norton Password Manager extension.

Please look into the video at the bottom of the below document, to know how to setup and use Mobile Unlock Feature -

Re: Why Does NPM Keep Closing After A Few Hours On Firefox Or Chrome?...

viveksu,

You didn't READ my issue properly.

THE VAULT CLOSES BY ITSELF WHILE THE PC IS RUNNING.

Is there a timeout setting somewhere in Norton 360 that is causing this behavior in Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome browsers???

You assumed I had a SmartPhone to use Mobile Unlock. I DON'T. Did you miss the part where I stated I'm eidetic? That means a photographic memory, and the 16 character vault password is NOT THE ISSUE HERE.

I WANT TO KNOW WHY THE VAULT KEEPS CLOSING DOWN AFTER 'N' MINUTES PASS.

Is there a log file I can submit to engineering that would help to identify this issue; or could I run a standard MS debugger here and see if we get anything from THAT for engineering???

Hi FalconEddy,

Sorry, This shouldn't be the behavior.

How frequent you see this happening (I mean vault closing) ?

Post issue -> does it asks you to validate Vault Password alone OR both Norton Account login and vault password ?

Re: Why Does NPM Keep Closing After A Few Hours On Firefox Or Chrome?...

There's no specific set timeframe. A couple of hours to perhaps four hours. Nothing glaring in Windows Event Logs to identify this behavior.

VAULT PASSWORD ALONE.

Re: Why Does NPM Keep Closing After A Few Hours On Firefox Or Chrome?...

FYI, in case you weren't aware, the vault will close each time you close your browser (unless you use IE).  It should not close if the browser is kept open.

Symantec (now Norton LifeLock) made that decision for 'security'.

I believe in Chrome you can enable the Chrome setting, "Continue running background apps when Chrome is closed" to keep the vault open.

for fun:
Just tested Norton Open Vault with >
Vault remains open with Chrome cycle.

Why users want their decrypted credentials to remain loaded in memory in clear type...is head scratch.  Just me.
My password manager is set to Lock n' Exit after 5 minutes.  Just me.

bjm_ :

"My password manager is set to Lock n' Exit after 5 minutes"

OK. So where is this setting that 'Locks n' Exits' ??? Is it only available with a particular group of Symantec products (with Life-Lock subscriptions)??

Yes, your passwords, AND Krusty13's are most likely fairly safe in an encrypted state up in The Cloud in the Symantec closed vault; and the Cloud Vault is an effective general solution for end users . HOWEVER, there ARE other high end utilities (generally designed for business servers) that are able to be configured to monitor incoming traffic, identify issues set for your requirements, and start to block/shutdown/disable items on the network system node(s) of your choosing, in mere milliseconds.

As I stated in my OP's second sentence, I felt having Identity Safe passwords local was "MUCH SAFER with MY setup". There was a reason for THAT. In reality, it's actually about equal, IMHO, with having them encrypted up in The Cloud. Despite my occasionally somewhat quirky methods of assessing and implementing solutions, I'm actually NOT an idiot. If that WERE the case, I would have never earned a double Master in Engineering degree from MIT at 22, or retired as a Senior Director of Global Technology from a Fortune 500 company at the age of 46.

Back to the issue at hand.

I KNOW my Cyber Threat security software didn't shut it down...so what did???

My daily rider password manager is not Norton password manager.
My Norton password manager is setup with a few non-sensitive credentials, for testing.
Sorry, my post regarding "My password manager..." <here> was not clear.

You know bjm_, THAT has to be one of the most vacuous comments in ANY thread I've EVER seen; and YOU'RE at a 'GURU' level here??? Wow...just WOW!!!

You replied to my question with nearly non-sequitur information about SOME OTHER PASSWORD MANAGER.

Really? REALLY???  I mean, this IS a Norton Community Forum, correct? Therefore, one would naturally deduce that the words 'password manager' were a given in reference to NORTON Password Manager, correct???

With THAT said, I'm actually ecstatic having an IQ of 170, since it appears I will be solving THIS enigma on my own, in addition to why the product will not properly create a shared folder on the network, so I may backup my seven PC nodes to my new NAS 'server'.

Oh, apology accepted.

Um, my initial reply in this thread was to Krusty13.

I'm here to clarify....as I recall.... my initial reply in this thread was to Krusty13.

My contributions, as always, are offered with the best of my ability, with the best intentions.

My contributions may not satisfy all users, all the time.

Re: Why Does NPM Keep Closing After A Few Hours On Firefox Or Chrome?...

Alright bjm_, it WAS prefaced with 'Krusty13:', so it appears your disclaimer is somewhat valid from THAT point of view.

I'm just having exceptionally bad experiences with Tech Support people, developers, software engineers, and the like at this point in time. It seems as though everyone I've dealt with over the past three weeks graduated college as a 'C-' student, and I'm fed up with dealing with people working off a flow-chart, and others that have absolutely NO KNOWLEDGEBASE OF THEIR OWN. It's highly frustrating and exceptionally time-consuming, not to mention the factor that it yields ZERO RESULTS.

Still waiting for a call back from the developers at Norton to discuss another key issue that should have been a 'show-stopper' before releasing this product. THAT's my PROFESSIONAL ASSESSMENT, NOT AN OPINION.

However, like Rodney Dangerfield's tag line, "I get no respect, no respect at all." Contact was to be made within 48 hours and initiated by Norton. It's now been over 120 HOURS, with not so much as a peep from Norton on the other issue; and it was an escalation from a THIRD TIER TECH SUPPORT PERSON.

Can't seem to win no matter HOW I approach issues with this setup.

Sorry I dropped a sledgehammer on you, but, with THAT answer, it just got my nasty freak going a bit. Got more personal than it should have. Apologies. I know you're here trying to make a difference for the masses, because I do the same thing on other boards & forums for aerospace, physics, Euclidian geometry, electronic circuits, robotics, digital music recordings, and audio mastering engineers.

Best,

. . Falcon Eddy
