Why is Norton unresponsive and a spam generator

Why has Norton become a generator of unwanted popups and spam?  On a similar note why are they totally unresponsive?  After having subscribed for many years I felt forced to cancel my subscription because of all the pop ups and spam I get and after numerous messages to them requesting to stop and receiving no response I cancelled.  I still am getting these annoying pop ups.  They seem to have become exactly the hacker I had subscribed to have them protect me against.

Hi DaveW123 ,

What popups and spam are you talking about?

Various sales saying to say get protected.  I think many are from Norton Care for some kind of identity protection.  If you look at Norton community Forum there are a lot of irritated people on the same issue.(query block Norton pop ups).  Since Norton was totally unresponsive to my inquiries I cancelled my long term service contract with them.

Ok, try this open your norton product, and go to settings > administrative settings:

Look for the setting that says Special Offer Notification and turn that off, click apply.

Let  me know how that goes for you.

When is your pop ups happening and is it in browsers etc?

Re: Why is Norton unresponsive and a spam generator

I am assuming it is within the browser.  They popup in the bottom right of the screen.  Next time one shows up I will close the browser and see if it goes away or persists.

Re: Why is Norton unresponsive and a spam generator

Hi DaveW123:

Disabling Special Offer Notifications (Settings | Advanced Settings | Special Offer Notifications) in your Norton interface should prevent most pop-up ads for paid products like Norton Core, Norton LifeLock, etc. on your desktop. However, you might still see pop-ups nagging you to install and/or configure Norton browser extensions (e.g., Norton Password Manager, Norton SafeWeb, etc), especially after a product update - see peterweb's suggestion in the thread intrusive popup.

If you want to stop receiving spam e-mails from Norton you need to unsubscribe from the settings in your Norton Account.  Log in to your Norton Account at https://my.norton.com/account/home, click the Personal Information tab, scrolled down to Email Preferences and make sure the option to Email me product updates, offers and security newsletters is disabled.  I believe this account settings is still enabled by default when users create a new account.

In theory that should work, but in practice I continue to receive the occasional spam e-mail from Norton, presumably  because the e-mails are classified as "important security alerts" instead of product offers.  Even clicking the Unsubcribe link at the bottom of these spam e-mails doesn't completely stop them. See further comments in Unperson's thread Receiving Norton promotional emails though that account setting is unchecked

Re: Why is Norton unresponsive and a spam generator

Thank you for the suggestions, it is concerning that a company that purports to protect you against this activity is actually using your information to generate it.  Everyone should boycott Norton, maybe they will get the idea if people cancel in mass.

Re: Why is Norton unresponsive and a spam generator

Hi DaveW123:

I agree.  I have some sympathy for software developers who add pop-up ads to free utilities like CCleaner Free and Malwarebytes Free to try and generate revenue and recoup their costs, but it's unacceptable to do this to Norton customers who purchase an annual subscription for their Norton Security software and don't want to be constantly nagged with pop-up ads and spam e-mails.

It's unfortunate that Symantec seems more concerned about turning a profit for their shareholders by trying to upsell unwanted products and services (not to mention scraping "non-personal" data off our hard drives and browsers and selling it to third-party partners) than they are about providing decent customer service to their paying clients.
