Why NS opens IE instead of Chrome when checking for new version

If you click "Check for New Version" or "Scan Facebook Wall" NS opens IE even though Chrome is the default browser. Is there a way to change this to open Chrome instead?

The instruction might be embedded in Symantec's link code so probably only Symantec could change this, however it's not that important.

It has done this in the last 2 versions. Why not code it to use the default browser?

I'm not sure but maybe it's easier for Symantec to use IE even it is not the default browser for any user.

You could also add your input to the "Product Suggestions" thread.

re: last 2 versions....Is that last two versions of Norton / IE / Chrome / ?

Check for New Version (NIS) opens Firefox ...

When I had the last 2 versions (Maybe more) of NIS it always opened IE. If yours opens Firefox then maybe there is an option to open in the browser of choice. That is was my original question if there is an option I can't find to do this.

Thanks

Re: Why NS opens IE instead of Chrome when checking for new version

Hello sholmes1

The option to check for new versions means if a new year's version of the product has come out. If you are using NIS version 21, then checking for new version is really useless because there is no new version for NIS. That product has come to the end. The new products for 2015 are Norton Security and Norton Security with Backup. The new products come out around Aug. or Sept.

Check for new versions does not mean a new patch for NIS 2014 which is version 21 to change it for example 21.5 to 21.6.Check for new versions will not give you that information. Therefore, I just turn that feature off since I wouldn't want to carry an installer in my computer for a few months until I am ready to install it.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.18.0.213 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

fwiw ~ I have Automatic Download New Version Off...from before v21.6 was the last version.   Rt Click Check for New Version opens Firefox.
I have neither IE or FF set as default.  FF is primary and maybe Norton somehow knows....?

Check your Program Access.  IDK if it'll change anything.  I have mine at Custom.  Maybe yours is at Microsoft.

That got me on the right path. I was looking for Program Access in NS at first, but then searched Set program access and computer defaults in the control panel under Default Programs. Mine is set to custom, but in the browser section it was set to Use my current browser. I then selected Chrome and OK and it worked fine.

Thanks!

Re: Why NS opens IE instead of Chrome when checking for new version

@ sholmes1,

Your solution works (I think you are the only person who can set this forum thread as solved --which you should do -- since you are the OP).  I had been searching within N360 Settings to find a fix for Firefox always opening when I clicked on "Get Support" in the Norton Menu.  Since I have had recent problems with FF associated with N360 & N Identity Safe I wanted the default browser to be Chrome instead of FF.  No matter how many times I changed the default in FF and Chrome using the browser settings, FF always became the default for Norton. However, using the computer's Control Panel overrides the browser default settings.

Control Panel > Choose the programs that Windows uses by default > Set program access and computer defaults > Custom > Choose a default web browser > Google Chrome (for me and I also unchecked/disabled Internet Explorer's "Enable access to the program" since I do not use it) > and then click OK to finish.

Thank you (and thanks to bjm_for leading you down that righteous path to computer glory...)

Re: Why NS opens IE instead of Chrome when checking for new version

I hope you won't mind my asking a somewhat related question while we are on the topic of browser selection.

I have IE 11 as my default browser under Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit and I'm happy with that.

However there are a couple of websites (Blue Mountain eCards is one) where the interactive site does not work to completion under IE 11 (OK until you tell it to send the card by email and that button does not function) but it's OK under Firefox.

Is there a syntax in the shortcut "address" that forces a different browser than the default to open just for that website. At present I open Firefox from a desktop icon and then enter the destination but it would be nice to just use a Blue Mountain desktop shortcut.

Thanks

Re: Why NS opens IE instead of Chrome when checking for new version

Hugh,

If you do not already have your default browser (or any other program) set to "Make a file type always open in a specific program" follow the second step below.  However, first try to set your default program(s) in the first (next) step sequence.

Control Panel > Default Programs >  Set your default Programs (to set a program as the default for *all* file types and protocols it  can open) >  Click on the program (IE in your specific case) > Click Set as Default.

If you already have done that or if it does not work, try making a file type or protocol *always* open in a specific program by accessing the next item under default programs entitled "Associate a file type or protocol with a program"  Then 'Click on an extension to view the program that currently opens it by default.  To change the default program, Click > Change program'  This should work with virtually any extension or protocol.

Note: Even if you have IE selected as your default browser within 'Set program access and computer defaults' (requires an Admin account) you still might also have to Select IE within 'Set your Default programs'.  I had a similar issue where I had to have my program set as Default in *both* of those Default Program sections.

I've pined this out and will have to study it to make sure we are on the same wavelength as to what my goal is ..... More later.
