Windows Update 18July ...Turning Norton off and using Windows Defender

Help after reading other posts I am suffering the same problem ....Windows downloaded its big update 2 days ago and I noticed yesterday that  Norton is turned off and Windows Defender is now being used(never used it before)...Norton has been working for the past 4 yrs....I can get to the page to turn off Windows Defender...both the anti-virus and the firewall....and it gives me the option of turning Norton on but nothing happens....One page that shows both Norton and Windows Anti Virus.. has left Norton in a grey area but it will let me turn Defender back on ....Norton.. states error 8504.101...and offers to download a patch that require a restart but after restarting nothing has changed.....Also Norton will not start from Desktop......HELP

I suggest downloading and running the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool.  This will download a new copy of Norton, uninstall your current version and install the fresh new copy.

Be sure to read the Before you begin section.

Once you have the new version installed run Live Update, restarting where required, until no more updates are found.

Please let us know how you get on.

Thanks.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: Windows Update 18July ...Turning Norton off and using Windows Defender

The good news is, Windows Defender is good at protecting, so no need to worry. The weird news is, I haven't had this issue, although many people did. I am wondering if It has to do something with system configurations or hardware related? (I know, it does sound a little silly). As Krusty mentioned, full uninstall and reinstall should solve the issue. You could also try doing that in safe mode just in case.

Re: Windows Update 18July ...Turning Norton off and using Windows Defender

Hi thanks for the info....I should say that my Norton was only renewed on the 10 July....(new download)....however I have removed Norton and reloaded and its now working....Windows Defender is still there and it acknowledges that Norton is now working and providing Anti Virus and Firewall Protection...but it says " It will do periodic checks to make sure Norton is working ok"....So it looks like I have two systems.....If this had occurred before my recent renewal I would probably have used Windows and saved the renewal fee...Thanks again..

Windows Defender won't intervene that much. Since it comes by default with Windows and is nicely integrates with the processes, you won't have that many issues when it comes to it. Glad it is sorted out!
