Bug: NS will not install in Windows 10

I'm trying to get NS 22 installed on the newly released Windows 10 build 6.4.9841 but I'm getting the following error message:

"The Norton product will not install in compatibility mode."

This error message is wrong, the setup is not running in compatibility mode.

Screenshot:

My question: Will there be an update to the installer or is there a workaround to this issue?

[Yes, I know, Win10 is a pre-release software, but the kernel is not much different than Win8.1's kernel, and obviously the setup is stopping because it detects an unknown version of Windows.]

Or will there be a beta version of NS 22 [2015] for Win10 specifically as it was with NIS2012 back in the Win8 pre-release days?

Thanks.

Re: Bug: NS will not install in Windows 10

Hi,

So far, in NS &NSwB system requirements Win 10 is not supported.

I really have no idea, if there will be a specific installer for W 10.

Hope this helps,

Hi Apostolos,

Thanks for the reply;

I hope that there will be some kind of "inital" support for Win10 (at least the installer should start working: ie: installing the actual product) because currently I have to use WinDefender and it is a resource hog and also its detection rates are way worse the Symantec's.

So, I hope a Symantec Employee will say something about Win10 compatibility soon.

Re: Bug: NS will not install in Windows 10

Thanks for the warning .... is yours 32 bit or 64 bit?

I'll be installing the 32 bit shortly although my computer would support 64 but I need to run an old Windows 98SE generation bit of software that my wife uses and it has a 16 bit installer .....

But will Norton Security run fine in Windows 10 if one upgrades from Window 8.1 with Norton Security already installed?

I'm running the 64-bit version of Win10, but I think the installer will say the same thing with 32-bit release.

And just another warning: Be aware that Windows Update can not be disabled, not even set to 'Notify me about updates, but don't install them' the only option is to automatically install the updates.

Screenshot:

Microsoft says this is needed because they will be releasing new Windows builds through WinUpdate.

And one more thing: If you're running the English language version of Win7 / 8 or 8.1 you can do a straight upgrade to Win10 through WindowsUpdate. The only thing you need to do is download a small setup file (setup.exe from MS Win10 download link) then search for new updates on WU. But I haven't tried this way, I did a clean installation of Win10 from the ISO file.

I upgraded from win 8.1 to windows 10 and the installer automatically removed my Norton Antivirus 21. Will any new update will be released for win 10 users?

Just as a feedback:

Here are the Log files from the installer (from C:\ProgramData\NortonInstaller)

And these are the interesting lines from the installer log file:

That's very useful. Hopefully the released version will restore the Update choices. I can understand with this since the Preview is not a complete version .... yet.

Do you remember during the early stages of the installation procedure whether it gives you a choice of how to install including one that enables you to choose the drive to install on ... as before which enables one to dual boot which I will be doing.

I plan to use the 32 bit .... I noticed a warning with the 64 bit (Enterprise) offer about older hardware  << For 64-bit installations of Windows 10 Technical Preview for Enterprise, a small number of older PCs will be blocked from installing the preview because they don't support CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW, and LAHF/SAHF.   >> I downloaded the Enterprise 32 bit version but I'll probably use the normal preview at least at first.

Re: Bug: NS will not install in Windows 10

We have to remember this is a Technical Preview, which is way ahead of any regular public betas. Microsoft is almost using us as Alpha testers this time. There is no reason to expect that all software, including security software would be ready for the initial release. If you read the material including the EULA, it is noted that software may not be compatible, including security software.

I have not installed Win 10 yet. Can anyone comment on whether there are compatibility modes in Win 10 that might allow the installer to run?

You're welcome Hugh,

Yes, you can install it as a dual-boot OS, the installer is exactly the same as Win8.1's one (which is the same as in Win7) just with a different build number and wallpaper.

I don't know what are the differences in the Enterprise edition as I use the "normal" Win10 TP.

Regarding the 64-bit difference:

- If you have an AMD CPU : those AMD processors are not compatible which use DDR1 memory controller and use Socket 754, 939 & 940, except D, E & F stepping models. All models which use DDR2 or newer memory controller are compatible.

- If you have an Intel CPU: If your socket is LGA775, only Pentium4's which have the following codenames are compatible: Cedar Mill, Presler & only G1 revision ones from Prescott. All newer Intel CPUs are compatible (like Core 2, Core i3/5/7).

Re: Bug: NS will not install in Windows 10

If you don't mind, I would change the title of this thread. This is NOT a bug in NS or NIS. Windows 10 is a technical preview (I would call it an Alpha release) therefore there is no reason to expect any software to run properly on it, specially security software, let alone call this failure to install a bug from the side of Norton's products.

You don't even know if they had time to install the preview themselves. Hopefully, they can release some sort of patch or test version for you to try but that's as much as you can normally expect given the status of Windows 10... don't you think?

I really hope you're just kidding, MTBeast...

Of course it is a bug in NS installer as it shouldn't stop here. In fact if you don't know bug == an issue or error in program code. Or what do you think, it is a feature??

I don't expect NS or any other software to work and be 100% compatible with this very early build of Win10, but it is the perfect time to report bugs (=errors) so they have time to correct it before a new build of Win10 arrives or the RTM build arrives.

I also do not call this a failure of Norton / Symantec, I just report it, as you know if something doesn't work with BETA or Alpha softwares, it should be reported. In fact I reported here in the forums (this thread) and also to Microsoft through the Windows Insider program. But I think it needs to be fixed from Symantec's side and not MS' side.

I would be REALLY surprised if they haven't already started working on compatibility with NS + Win10. Why? Because, there are a lot of pre-release builds from Windows exist which MS give to the OEMs, and other software companies (like Symantec) to test their software with the new releases. The best example is the screenshots and videos from winfuture.de which showed an even earlier build (9834) from Win10 but that was meant for OEMs, and software companies and not for the public.

Else how could be hardware vendors write drivers for devices which are released on the same day as Windows versions are released too?

One of the "guru's" on CompuServe has installed 10 in a VM and warns against dual booting on the grounds that the other OS might get contaminated. That's not as odd as it may sound since my Windows 7 which is multibooting and has had 8 on it since release and I think pre-RTM does have the odd corrupted desktop which starts rebuilding in "tiles" from time to time. Something that does not bother me enough to try to fix it and my nVidea graphics chip on the mobo is old

I appreciate the explanation. I do use AMD

It will indeed cause problems in your file system if you dual boot with Win7 or an earlier version of Win (like XP). But fortunately this can be solved by turning off the fast startup feature (Control Panel -> Power Options -> Choose what the power button does -> Untick 'turn on fast startup' checkbox).

But, unfortunately your video card will not work properly with Win8.1 and newer (Win10 included). AMD (formerly ATi) has discontinued the Radeon HD 4000, 3000, 2000 and Radeon HD Series AGP GPU's. The last driver is dated 2013 January, but that is a legacy driver which means you will most likely run into problems with apps which use OpenGL and hardware acceleration. I too experienced this when I tested Win8.1 with my very old HD3450 video card, and it had problems with 8 and 8.1. One of them was: if fast startup was turned on, after a restart (shutdown -> cold start) I got only a black screen and a mouse cursor, nothing else. Since then I replaced that card with a newer HD7750 which is fully supported. After that all problems were gone.

I appreciate the explanation. I do use AMD

AMD Athlon II X2 250
 Cores 2
 Threads 2
Name AMD Athlon II X2 250
 Code Name Regor
 Package Socket AM3 (938)

But at least your CPU, is fully compatible with Win8.1 & 10 even with the 64-bit versions too. So it won't be a problem.

And one more thing: after you install the preview, be sure to go to PC settings (metro style control panel) -> Update and recovery -> Preview builds, then click on 'change the time my PC installs preview builds' and uncheck the 'allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer' checkbox, else it will turn on your computer when new Win10 builds are available and will install them automatically. There's a progress:

Now when I click on the 'Go to Technical Support Web Site' link then the opened website now at least lists Windows 10:

While it says it won't be supported officially until the RTM build arrives, I do hope, that at least with a later NS build & Win10 build, the installer will work.

Yes indeed as the support page was recently updated: 6th of October (2014).

Me included. I have Win10 installed since day 1, and since then I have submitted about 50 feedbacks using the Windows Insider program which is actively used by testers.

Here's an example: (showing Aero Glass theme requests)

They even say in the app itself that "we are listening", well I hope they're really listening this time.

And actually Win10TP (build 9841) is very stable, all my programs (except Norton security) installed successfully.

Re: Bug: NS will not install in Windows 10

And it probably will not for some time. This Windows is still in Alpha testing, not even a beta yet.

These are the builds that companies like Norton first get to start their coding and testing. MS has just signed up a huge number of volunteers to test features and compatibilities with drivers etc.

Re: Bug: NS will not install in Windows 10

As peterweb stated, this is an alpha build. Also this is not a consumer build, that doesn't arrive until early 2015. MS states not to use 3rd party AVs for testing but to use Defender (although many disregard that advice. ;p).

Re: Bug: NS will not install in Windows 10

From a Wikipedia article on the Software Development cycle found here , in the section for the Alpha phase...

The alpha phase usually ends with a feature freeze, indicating that no more features will be added to the software. At this time, the software is said to be feature complete.

MS has noted the features have not been fixed yet.

Bear in mind that Symantec does not support products that are in beta.  Norton may work with the current release, but you have no assurance that it will continue to work, or even that it is providing full protection.
