Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

Hi all,

I recently visited my Firefox Extensions page and found a blank page with a message saying I didn't have any extensions, despite them being there on the screen.  After visiting the Mozilla Forum and getting their advice (involving deletion of various "extensions" files and recreating them, I now have my Extensions page populated again, EXCEPT for the Norton Toolbar listing.  It's there and when I right-click in the menu area it's there and ticked.  Screen cap attached, where you can see the icons for the extensions and the Norton Toolbar.  Any ideas, please?

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

The notification which you see on Norton toolbar is for Identity safe. Norton released a new tool bar which supports Firefox 41 and 42 as well but Norton Identity Safe and Facebook Scan feature is not available in this release. We need to wait for new update as Norton have promised top get Identity Safe working on new tool bar.

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

I have Firefox 42 and Norton Security Premium 22.5.5.15 and have the same indications as iancol when I check the Firefox extensions.

My guess is that with the new re write of the Toolbar, it may be handled differently by FF than in the past. I'll see if I can find out more.

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

Thanks, poppins,

I'm aware of the situation with ID Safe (very disappointed it's taking so long, but reasons understood).  I Thought I'd see what happens to the Extensions list when I untick the Norton Toolbar box in the drop down menu (apart from the toolbar disappearing).  On opening the Extensions page I'm back to square one - no extensions showing!  I'll have a look at what's on the Mozilla Forum and report back.

No Norton Toolbar listed with Add-ons > Extensions.
Norton Toolbar (name) changed to Norton Identity Safe (at this time).
Firefox has one extension (at this time) = Norton Identity Safe.
Drop down context menu = Norton Toolbar (at this time).

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

Thanks, bjm,

A bit confusing, but if that's a correct display, then OK.  I did copy across my laptop's profile (which also looks like the one in the screen cap I sent) and it worked OK, but now I've come back to the PC after an hour, the Extensions page is blank again.  Is there any way this could be Norton-related, or have I to get a Firefox solution?

Thanks,

Ian

Iancol,

based upon google.  I'd say defer to Firefox support.  I'm wondering if Firefox Sync is causal.

Hi again bjm,

I've never heard of Firefox Sync, so doubt if I've been using it.  I'm working myself up to a clean install of Firefox, unless I get a more attractive alternative from the Mozilla Forum.  I'll report back.

I gave up and imported all my bookmarks/contact/logins to Chrome.  I don't love Chrome but so be it.

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

It is correct that Norton Toolbar appears in Firefox Extensions as Identity Safe. For those of us who love Firefox and Identity Safe and who want to hang in while awaiting a fix from Norton, here's a work-around: ID safe can still be opened manually from the Toolbar. Click on the ellipsis (three dots) at right end of Norton Toolbar to open Toolbar Options. Click Open Identity Safe Settings at the bottom of the Options pop-up. Log into ID Safe, then just close the Settings box; the ID Safe window behind it remains open. I leave it open and minimized so logins can be obtained (copy by clicking the "eye" beside a login), created, etc. Of course this is cumbersome compared to the nice functions of the old version, but I'm gonna trust that Norton will bring those back.

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

Hi,

Thanks, t.  I use the method described, as advised in the product announcement.  A bit of a bind, though, as I've a lot of log ins!  I'm still getting weird action on Firefox, asking me to activate the add-ons, then disappeeraing them from the Extensions page.  I'll probably have to do a clean install of FF to sort it.

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

I tried a new FF profile, loaded up my preferred extensions, restored my bookmarks and everything looked fine, till I left the PC and returned later to find I'd lost the list of extensions again.  I've asked on the FF Forum what else I can do.

Nothing from the FF Forum yet, other than another report of the same problem.  To boot, I've now lost the Norton Toolbar from the page and View dropdown.  Is there a Norton routine for geting this back alt least?

I have FF 42.0 and NS Premium 22.5.5.15. If I click on View in FF, I can click on Toolbars and I see Norton Toolbar listed.

Maybe you need to refresh your FF installation. Try redownloading FF from Mozilla and running the installation routine.

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

Hi Peter,

I've already done what you suggest, using the download facility on the FF Help page.  I've got my Norton Toolbar back and, for a while, had my other extensions listed.  They're all still there but the page is blank.  Looks like it will have to be a complete uninstall/clean up/reinstall FF.  Nothing at all from the FF Forum, which is most unusual.

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

Hi floplot,

I've done what I'd hoped was a clean install but after a few hours was back to the position I was in when I opened this thread - all the add-ons work but are not listed on the Extensions page.  I give up.  SO long as they actually work, even if not listed, it'll have to do.  No ideas coming from the FF Forum yet.

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

Hello lan

Your Toolbar is working as much as has been released so far. I would suggest you wait until you have a finished Toolbar and then see how the Extension Page looks like. Mozilla still has more changes in mind  so perhaps there will be changes having to do with that page. The proceed with caution you see means that it has not been verified yet and Mozilla has not signed off on it. For the Firefox users sake, I hope that Mozilla signs it before it Firefox 43 is released.

Thanks.

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

Hi floplot,

A FF user posted the following on the Mozilla Forum:

I think I may have resolved the issue with my extensions not showing. I discovered a small green tick in my hidden icons on my taskbar. It was a malware program called "MalwareProtectionLive". I have no idea how It got there but after doing a search (http://botcrawl.com/malware-protection-live/) I followed the instructions to remove it using program uninstall from the control panel. I then ran Malwarebytes to ensure it was removed and then discovered the file folder in the following path (C:)>Users>[User Name]>AppData>Local>Microsoft.

If you can't find the folder, best to search for it "MalwareProtectionLive" and delete it. I restarted my laptop and all appears well again.

I found the offending software, followed the instructions shown on the linked site and, after a bit of messing about, have the extensions list back, but for how long I don't know.  I'll monitor for a while to see if it settles down, then sign off.

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

Hi again,

It's 3 days since I made the changes suggested by a FF Forum poster and everything's fine, so I think we can call this solved. Just one last query.  Is the rogue software something Norton should have picked up?

Re: Norton toolbar present in Firefox but missing from list of firefox extensions

Hello lan

Norton can add the malware to their database so they can make an antivirus definition if you still have the malicious file and send it to Norton. I think they have to have the malware sample first before they can create the antivirus definition.

If there is a possibility that the file might be infected, please submit it to Symantec using this link:

https://submit.symantec.com/websubmit/retail.cgi

If you still have the file, then you can send it to them.

Thanks.

Hi floplot,

I'm afraid whatever was there has gone, but the link in the post copied from the FF Forum takes you to the problem, which may help.

Thanks again,
