Latest Patch for Norton Security failed to install properly

Just ran liveupdate on my Dell XPS 8700 Windows 8.1 PC and it downloaded and installed a patch which required a restart. Clicked restart, PC restarted and rebooted with a Norton needs to restart window. Every time I rebooted same thing. Now on terminal hold with Symantec Support waiting for a level two support tech to answer the phone. Not a happy camper!

Same problem for me on Windows 7.  Constant prompt to restart.  Could not get the UI to launch either.  Re-installed from my original download back to a previous version and all is well now.  At least until the update gets applied via LiveUpdate again.

Hi, Tomb Raider. It installed ok for me, although I had to sign in and activate the version on my desktop. Laptop installed fine.

If necessary you might need to try the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool, in case the update became corrupted.

http://www.norton.com/nrnr

If used, please read the Before you begin note, and run Live Update after until no more are found. Reboot again.

Me too! Reinstalled older version but will not run Live Update until sure this problem is fixed. The bad update was on my Windows 7 desktop, I am unwilling to do an update on this Windows 8.1 laptop.

Re: Latest Patch for Norton Security failed to install properly

I am also facing the issue here on Windows 7 SP1. Every reboot prompts another restart. No solution yet.

Norton ought to develop a separate fix for this - without requiring the end user to uninstall/reinstall.

That is if the  Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool has been updated for 22.5.

I know we've had to wait after a new version has been released before.

Edit:  I don't think NRT has been updated yet.

All,

After a long wait, Elevated Tech support appeared to resolve the problem by a complete removal and reinstall, then about 5 minutes later had an unfix-able SONAR error appear. 30 more minutes with tech support and now that problem appears fixed also.

Symantec staff conspicuous by their absence! Would it not be good idea to pull this patch until they have a fix? The USA will be online in 5 hours and if it still doesn't work by then they will be flooded out with complaints!

Re: Latest Patch for Norton Security failed to install properly

Had the reboot issue, then the SONAR issue after using Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool. I decided to uninstall via Programs and Features, chose to delete all user settings and files when asked. I then rebooted, installed NS again -now everything seems to work like it should.

We need a fix now.

I can not uninstall and reinstall all of my machines!!!

Re: Latest Patch for Norton Security failed to install properly

Appears to me that the Norton development center at Hyderabad, India did not test the patch at high quality testing level prior to deploying it to liveupdate servers. Now this is a big headache for all of us end users. A proactive response for a fix needed urgently.

Re: Latest Patch for Norton Security failed to install properly

A complete removal and re-install is not desirable for me, as I believe that would force me to lose my local Identity Safe vault based on what I have read.  Also, I mysteriously woke up to a System Recovery message this morning saying I had a BSOD after I re-installed.  Likely because I have not run LiveUpdate manually after I re-installed for fear of pulling this update again.

Kudos0

Re: Latest Patch for Norton Security failed to install properly

The BSOD problem happened to me too. I had to do a 'clean install' removing settings etc. then NRT then download latest version.

I have also rebooted about a dozen times now and it wants to again after NS installed a new update. I keep getting the message, "Restart Required. Setup has detected that a previous patch has been completed but requires a restart. Please restart your computer to finish installing this version." It's in a loop.. argh! Is NS going to release a flat file update to fix this like soon?

I had the same problem with reboots, so I ran the NRnR tool, which uninstalled it, failed to re-install, installed manually, ran updates, restarted and problem went away, ran live update, patched to new version. All is well.....EXCEPT....

Tamper protection cannot be enabled. I enable it, and it disables itself immediately upon going back in to settings.

Edit: Right after I posted the above, Norton popped up with Error 3039, 1 and couldn't fix itself. Seems to be related to SONAR which is now disabled and cannot be re-enabled.

Seems Norton is all screwed up now, it's red with a FIX NOW button, which keeps trying to fix SONAR but fails.

Relatives who are running NS (I'm still running NIS V21) and not very computer literate just called me this morning with 'some sort of Norton errors' ... I had to have them perform an uninstall to fix things, and now they may need to 're-set' all their preferences.

If these issues seem to be pretty widespread, why hasn't Norton pulled this update?  They seem to still be pushing it out

Hi Tony,

In addition to the aesthetic anomalies I reported about yesterday ...

https://community.norton.com/en/comment/6415361#comment-6415361

I have now come to the realization that this update has also borked the MS Outlook (in my case Outlook2010) <> Norton Anti-Spam interface.  Specifically, it now takes Outlook about 15 minutes to transact a mail run against my ISP's (TWC) email servers - a process that prior to this upgrade injection required just a couple of seconds (I have a 300x20 MBPS ISP service link)...

Prior to reading through this new thread I was about to try using the NRnR tool to see if it could repair what I now believe to be a damaged/corrupted/incomplete NSwB update installation. But within this thread I'm seeing reports that the NRnR and NRT tools are inflicting even greater damage than what has already been wrought by this update?

https://community.norton.com/en/comment/6415911#comment-6415911

So - can you please provide us with Norton's official position on this?
Is it safe to try and recover from this bad patch using these tools or is it not?

Regards,
John
