Remove Norton 360 Backup folder on hard drive on Win10 faster

Using Norton's Delete files feature for an unwanted backup on C drive is estimated to take over 3 months. How can I erase the entire backup folder on the C drive? The file has 104,000 files and is deleting at the rate of only 600 per 8 hours of dedicated time. Customer support has offered no solution other than to continue with this "molasses" delete feature of Norton 360.

Re: Remove Norton 360 Backup folder on hard drive on Win10 faster

I found the delete files feature to be quicker than finding the backup folder & pressing shift then right clicking the file & choosing delete (which will remove the file without moving it to the recycle bin first) but there are occasions where choosing to delete the backup file via the backup folder is better.

Re: Remove Norton 360 Backup folder on hard drive on Win10 faster

Deleting backup sets from within Norton is indeed extremely slow.  I'm not sure why it is implemented to do this file by file.  My guess is that it is a part of the code set that has not been touched in a while.

Furthermore, Norton support indicated that it is not possible to find the mapping between named backup sets and the UUID named folders on the backup disk which you need in order to determine which folders you should delete manually (several orders of magnitude faster than deleting from within Norton).  I would have thought the mapping would be stored in the registry somewhere, but apparently not.

The only way I have been able to try to find a mapping between named backup sets and the UUID named folders on the backup disk is to compare size and file count and the modification dates of the subfolders.   That is, right click on the UUID named folder and have the OS tell you the size and number of files. Then look at the size and number of files of a backup set (through the "delete backup up files" interface or restore interface).   The matchup is very approximate and is not useful if you have a number of backup sets with approximately the same size.

If you come up with a better way, please post.

Re: Remove Norton 360 Backup folder on hard drive on Win10 faster

Thanks for the suggestions and empathy. This free software, http://www.jam-software.de/treesize_free/, resolved the issue in less than one hour!!! In fact, it was this software that helped identify that about 47% of the C drive was occupied by Norton backup. In order to delete files enter treesize as an administrator (you will see that option after installation and it is also on one of the pull-down menus). Scan the drive in question and be patient as it might take a few minutes to completely map the drive. Then navigate to Norton backup on the treesize map, select the drive and the folder.

Initially I only deleted a 13 G folder with the right click of the mouse. It went to the recycle bin.

Then I selected the entire folder on the C drive (now 198 G), right clicked. The program responded that the folder was too large for recycle and did I want to completely delete it. YES, YES, Yes!!!!!!!!!!!! In less than 50 minutes it was gone.

The Norton product still works fine on the external backup drive.

Now will not have to wait 4-5 months for Norton's Delete function.

Hope this helps anyone who has similar issues. Perhaps it is time to purchase the treesize professional.
