Warning Norton Security tech remotely ruined my laptop

Installed norton security on my laptop and I had a issue were the app would not run any scans and the security button was red.  Live update was working.  Windows 8.1 is showing antivirus and firewall not on and will not change.  Removed fast start up,  ran power eraser, restarted computer many times.  Still Red.   Went to Norton security website Had them remotely access my laptop.  He did somethings in the registry.  He restarted my laptop now it is stuck on 10% scanning and repairing drive for 4 hours.  He called me and said this will take a hour!  I am still waiting.  Has anyone else had this problem with Windows8.1.  I installed this Norton Security on my desktop windows7 and had no problems I have a license for 5 devices.

Re: Warning Norton Security tech remotely ruined my laptop

Sometimes a stuck scan can indicate a corrupted file that is trying over and over again to be read from a bad sector on the hard drive.

To check your hard disk, click on the Windows Start button. In the search box type CMD. Right click on cmd.exe and click on run as administrator. In the command prompt type "chkdsk c: /r"  without the quotes. A message will come up asking if you want to check the disk on the next restart. Answer 'Y'. Reboot and the check disk will run before Windows starts up. This check will check the file system as well as the physical disk surface. This scan can take a long time, depending on the size of your hard drive.

I do not use Windows 8/8.1, so others can help with any changes to these instructions to check your drive.

Re: Warning Norton Security tech remotely ruined my laptop

I Tried restarting laptop by holding power button down but just restarts the checkdisc session and is stuck at 10%.  Not able to get to windows.  Looks like i might have to reinstall windows.  Checking asus website to see how to restore windows before i installed norton security.  This tech went into my registry and made changes.  I watched him doing this and then he went to cmd and did a check disc on start up.  I had no problems with my asus laptop until today.

Thanks for your help

Re: Warning Norton Security tech remotely ruined my laptop

Restarting by holding the power button will not shut Windows down correctly.( if you are holding for 5 seconds or more).

Try running the chkdsk command as I suggested from a command prompt with Admin privileges. Then use the normal Windows shut down routine. As noted, it will take a long time as it is checking every physical location on the hard drive for errors. It can take over an hour depending on the size of your hard drive. Do not worry if it seems to hang at any given percentage.

You might also check that your system date, time and time zone are correct.

Re: Warning Norton Security tech remotely ruined my laptop

Hello

Before the tech made changes to your registry, did he back it up first? Before any changes are made to the Registry, it should always be backed up first. If you are going to try and restore your laptop to an earlier time, please disable NS first as it will not work Tamper Protection on. You will have to uninstall and reinstall NS then.

Re: Warning Norton Security tech remotely ruined my laptop

Hi

In order to get back into windows I restarted several times and a windows8 repair screen  came up I picked diagnose pc and came up and said could not repair.  Then it ran check disc after restarting computer from diagnoses screen.   About five hours of checking my 500 gig hard drive windows finally loaded.  I still had the same problem with norton security.  Ended up uninstalling it and then putting back on and norton is all green and working ok.  The tech might have been right about running check disc but never backed up.  That seems like a long time.  I did run check disc inside windows now and it didn't find any errors but hard drive could be going bad.  I never did do a system restore.

Thanks Flopot

Re: Warning Norton Security tech remotely ruined my laptop

Hello Bob

Thanks for coming back and reporting back to us. The problem might have been a bad download or a loss of internet in the middle of the install process. With all the changes that have been done, it might be a good idea to do a defrag if you have the type of hard drive that can be defragged.

Re: Warning Norton Security tech remotely ruined my laptop

The chkdsk may have taken some time because it did find errors and tried to fix things. Here is how to find the logs from the chkdsk run. It is from Windows 7, but should work for Win 8.   http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/96932-location-chkdsk-log-...

Re: Warning Norton Security tech remotely ruined my laptop

I ran power shell and pasted in the script from sevenforums and the chkdsk list at the end showed no bad sectors no further action is required.

Thanks
