safe web icons disappeared from bing

Norton web safe icons disappeared from Bing two days ago. Norton Safe Web is enabled. These icons do appear on Norton Search. They previously appeared on Bing for the past year or more. They were there one day but gone the next.

Hi strez, and welcome. What browser/browsers are you using ? I have Firefox, IE 11, and Chrome, and if I use Bing, the search icons appear in all.

Do the icons show when using the other major search websites (Google, Yahoo, Ask, etc.)?

Kind regards,

No. They only show on Norton

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

Just to qualify your statement, are you browsing via the Safe Search box in the Norton Toolbar, and which version of IE do you have ?

There has been an incompatibilty with IE 11, which has been solved by disabling Enhanced Protected Mode.

Microsoft issued a patch to do just that.

Disabling Smart Filter in IE, may also help.

If you have upgraded to IE11 but have remained on v20 [2013] (or prior) of your Norton Security product then this is the expected behavior for the Norton safe search icons.  This is due to Microsoft's decision to make "Edge" the default document rendering mode in IE11.  The Norton search site gets around this issue by first telling IE11 to render their search results web pages using IE9 compatibility mode.  The latest NTB (included with the v21 [2014] product versions) does not have this rendering compatibility problem as it works with Edge mode - but v21 certainly has other problems...

John

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

MS automaticaly updated my computer to IE 11. I have now updated Norton to 2014 security. This has made no difference. Norton icons still only appear on Norton search but not on Bing, Ask or Google.

Have you disabled EPM as F4E suggested?

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

Hi John,

I've encountered the same issue with the web safe icon with IE11 (I'm running Windows 7, 64 bit).  I've attempted the fixes you suggested, but still do not have the icons.  Do you possibly have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Jennifer

Hello

I would recommend that you go back to IE 10. IE 11 still has too many problems when using win 7. You will find that safe web icons will once again work as they should work. I would say that the problem lays with Microsoft and not with Norton or Symantec.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.17.3.50 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

Indeed, for those using earlier Windows operating systems, that's a viable temporary workaround - though Microsoft has now elevated the IE11 upgrade to the status of being an "Important Security Auto-Push" via Windows Updates, and one which requires some active user intervention in order to avoid being automatically re-updated to if removed.

Also note that is not doable at all for those who have elected to upgrade to Windows 8.1, or for those with new computers that came with Windows 8.1 pre-installed.

Kind regards,

John

My workaround has been to use a different web browser (in my case either Chrome or FF) until such time as Norton and Microsoft come together and work through these incompatibilities.

FWIW, I'd like to see the v20 NTB support "Edge" document rendering mode, but it appears Norton already has enough problems on their plate just getting the v21 NTB to work reliably for a broader swath of customer installations - so it would surprise me if the v20 NTB is ever made compatible (the last update to the v20 IE plugins are dated April and May of 2013).  Symantec's policy has (in the past) been to support their Norton products for a period of 2 years after the year in which they were released - something that is apparently now either remiss or a position which has officially been abandoned.

Kind regards,

John

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

I too had IE 11 "forced" upon my computer.  I went back to IE10 and still have no Safe web icons in Bing ( my preferred search engine ).  So hope there is a solution soon.

P.S. - To stop Windows from "demanding" an install on IE11 ( or anything else ), you can go to Windows Update, right click the item ( or items ) you do not want to install, select "hide update" and it will move to "Restore hidden updates".  Then when ( or if ) you want to install, you can still access them.

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

Hi JanR. I too went back to IE 10, and the Safe Search Icons were not showing in Bing, so I did what was suggested before and disabled EPM and the IE Smart Filter, and now icons are showing in Bing in IE 11, Firefox and Chrome.

Bringing Norton fully up to date before reopening each browser, seems to help, too.

Hi F4E,

Thank you for your suggestions.  I did LiveUpdate and checked to see that Norton was up to date.  Then I went to Internet Options ( IE10 ) and found there was only the IE Smart Filter was an option, so disabled it.  Restarted... still no icons, then shutdown and still no icons.  I then reluctantly reinstalled IE11 and disabled EPM and IE Smart Filter, restarted... still no icons and then shutdown... and still no icons.  Even though I'm a fan of Bing, I'll have to use Norton Safe Search as I rely on the Safe Web icons.  Many thanks again and Happy Holidays.

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

Hi, JanR. I just checked again today. My default search engine is Google, but when I go to Bing and search via the search field in all 3 browsers, the Norton icons show.

That's in Firefox, Chrome, and IE 11. Not sure why it's working for me, but not others.

Have you tried making Bing your default search engine, or do you just go to the Bing website ?

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

Hi again F4E,

Okay...under "Manage Add-ons", Bing is my default ( and only ) search provider.  I actually have always accessed Bing through Favourites and didn't have any problems with Safe Web icons until the last couple of weeks.  Is there something else that I need to do?  Also, I went back to IE10.

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

Hi, JanR. I can't think of anything. Have you thought of using Norton Connect Safe ? I use Norton's DNS servers rather than my Isp's.

I don't know if that makes any difference ? Have a look at this link.

I went to the link you kindly provided.  After reading through it, I feel that Norton Connect Safe is probably beyond my limited computer expertise.  Many thanks for all your endeavours to help me.  Please know it all has been sincerely appreciated.

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

Jan, it's really not difficult. All you do is replace your current Isp numbers, with Norton's. Explained here below, but if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, I can understand !...It may not even fix the problem What it WILL do, is block dangerous sites.

  • How do I set my DNS settings on Windows?
    1. Open the Control Panel from your Start menu.
    2. Click Network Connections and choose your current connection. { Network and Sharing Center }
    3. On the General tab of the Connection Status screen, click Properties.
    4. On the General tab of Connection Properties, scroll down and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click Properties.
    5. On the General tab of Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, select Use the following DNS server addresses, then enter the two Norton ConnectSafe IP addresses for the content filtering policy you would like to use (see Which content filtering policies are available for home and personal use?).

Ipv4 is the internet protocol, currently in use. That's the one you change.

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

Yep...you got it...being a rookie with computer stuff, I'm not comfortable.  One thing is that on the Control Panel, I don't see "Network Connections", just "Network and Sharing Center", which doesn't have a "General tab".  So even if I did feel somewhat comfortable, it's like I can't get there from here.......

Re: safe web icons disappeared from bing

Yep in Windows 7, it IS Network and Sharing Center. You then click onto Local Area Connection.

If you change your mind, { Let's get Christmas over ! }    someone can talk you through it, if you wish....

Yeah...if I feel confident enough to try Norton Safe Connect, it might be better to attempt it "next year".  In the mean time, it's Norton Safe Search for me !!!

Thanks so much again

UPDATE - 12/27/13

I have been still trying just about anything to get the Safe Web icons back in Bing.  I went to settings in Bing >Web>Search Language and changed from "limit searches to pages written in the following languages" to "search pages in any language" and voila...the Safe Web icons are back !!!  I just wanted to pass this along in case it might help someone else.
